Ongoing Destruction of Karuna Hill Alarming



With the ongoing rains, there are concerns that mining activities on the hillside of Karuna hill (for good quality Sergoit murram) is an environmental threat.

The excessive mining taking place here has the potential to trigger landslides and other disasters, as the removal of vegetation cover is not being adequately replaced. If left unchecked this land use activity is likely to lead to environmental degradation.
Although the land in question is privately owned, the Environmental Management and Coordination Act Chapter 387 provides guidelines for the protection of any hilly and mountainous areas that are at risk of environmental degradation.
The District Environment Committee is empowered to identify such areas and implement measures to safeguard them, including afforestation or reforestation, promoting voluntary tree planting initiatives, and taking steps to curb soil erosion and protect water catchment areas.
There has never been efforts to address this looming problem. Priority should be given to control murrum harvesting, protecting the water water source, and preventing soil erosion.

From the history of the Reformed Church of East Africa In the early 1900s, some people from the Boer republics in South Africa moved to Eastern Africa after the Anglo-Boer War. They didn't want to live under British rule, so they settled in Kenya. These migrant farmers were part of the Reformed Churches in South Africa. They formed their own congregation called Vergenoeg in Eldoret, Kenya. The land there was fertile and perfect for farming. At that time, Kenya was still a German colony called German East Africa, but it would soon become a British colony after World War I.  Rev. M. P. Loubser became the first minister of the congregation. He, along with other farmers, established a ministry among the farmworkers.
