MUTWOT, NANDI COUNTY

 by William Kiptoo

Mutwot is a trading center in Nandi County in Chesumei Sub County, Lelmokwo/Ngecheck Ward. It is situated along the Eldoret-Kapsabet road.
Mutwot, meaning reeds in Kalenjin, is named after the reeds that grow along the nearby Kipkaren river.
Mutwot is known for its old houses, some dating back to the 1930s and featuring unique Swahili-style roofing. The center served as a stopover for former President Moi.
Residents attribute the center's preserved old structures to the older generation's reluctance to sell their land.
While some consider Mutwot "rundown," or "mbovu," recent developments like security lights are also noted. Opinions vary, with some residents desiring development and better leadership, while others value its history and potential for peaceful retreats.
