David O’Shea’s shop, which now houses the Samsung Shop on Kenyatta Street in Eldoret, has an intriguing history. O’Shea himself was a long-term resident of Eldoret and held the position of Chairman at the Eldoret Sports Club during the 1950s. However, it’s his daughter, Dorothy O’Shea Hughes, who left a lasting architectural legacy.

Dorothy, an accomplished architect, played a pivotal role in shaping early Kenyan infrastructure. She designed several notable buildings, including the European Hospitals in Nairobi and Mombasa, the Pumwani Maternity Hospital, and Lady Grigg Hospital in Mombasa. Additionally, she contributed to the iconic Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.

One of her most significant projects was the design of St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, a renowned educational institution. Interestingly, Dorothy’s connection to the school extends beyond her architectural work, as she is buried on the school grounds, a testament to her lasting impact.

It’s fascinating to learn about the O’Shea family’s contributions to Eldoret and Kenya’s architectural landscape. Their legacy lives on through the buildings they designed and the memories they left behind.
