Pioneer Estate, Eldoret

Pioneer Estate is one of the older residential areas of Eldoret, the capital of Uasin Gishu County. Its name recalls the pioneers who came to the Uasin Gishu plateau in the early twentieth century and turned the settlement known as "64" into a farming town.

Why "Pioneer"?

The word pioneer runs all through Eldoret's early history. The first Afrikaner families who trekked to the plateau in 1908 and after called themselves pioneers, and the name was taken up by the town's early landmarks. The Pioneer Hotel was one of the first buildings in Eldoret, and before it the Pioneer Stables carried the mail to Eldoret by horse drawn spider cart. Most people agree that the estate, too, was named after those Boer pioneers who settled in Eldoret during the early colonial period. A Town That Needed Homes

Eldoret grew as a service centre for the farms around it. Settlers grew wheat and maize and kept dairy cattle, and the town needed homes for the people who ran its offices, shops, railway and services. After the railway reached Eldoret in 1924, and as the town grew into a municipality in the 1950s, new housing areas spread out from the old town centre. Estates such as Pioneer grew up to meet that need. Many of its older houses and buildings still stand today, a reminder of the town's early years.

Pioneer Today

Today Pioneer Estate is a busy, mixed neighbourhood, home to families from many parts of Kenya. It lies on the southern side of town, close to Ngeria and the Industrial Area, where Eldoret is expanding fastest. Land here that was once farmland or open ground is now in high demand for houses, rental flats, warehouses and transport yards. That growth has brought opportunity, but it has also brought land disputes, including double allocations and forged title deeds, which I wrote about in Ngeria, Pioneer, and Eldoret Industrial Area.

From a name that honours the first settlers to a neighbourhood shaped by today's land rush, Pioneer carries a good part of Eldoret's story in a single word.

If you grew up in Pioneer Estate or know when its first houses were built, please share what you remember.
